“I nostri clienti apprezzano molto queste iniziative.
THE UTOPIA OF A PERFECT WORLD
The apparent randomness of events hides a whole of universal regulations. If it is true that the cultural history is a struggle for memory, it is certain that the greatness of an enterprise must be searched in what remains in time, beyond any change or evolution. The ability of IBM leads, among other factors, to the primacy of being perceived by the market as solid technological reference partner. Solidity, concreteness, coherence, reliability: are some concept categories for a partnership strategy. The words by Enrico Cereda, Vice President Systems and Technology Group of IBM Italia, point out the innovations of a 2012-year rich in surprises that “the Big Blue” has reserved to the industrial world.
By Fiammetta Di Vilio
“A business culture based on essential values: customers, innovation, the ability of guessing new scenarios”. IBM has always succeeded in anticipating the progress stages by making available the inventions that characterize systems and infrastructures devised for the data management. And, together with data, also part of our life. Because technology reduces distances, allows collaborating with everyone everywhere, permits to consolidate new outlets. Today the market is certainly complex and aggressive, but it awards those who offer solutions that enable the change and assure a competitive advantage. “IBM is certainly ready for meeting this rationalization demand. Our challenge consists in integrating better and better the offer components and in going on wondering, every day, what we can do for the development and the innovation of enterprise and of the Country”, states Enrico Cereda, Vice President Systems and Technology Group of IBM Italia, who mentions as example “Pure Systems“, systems on which to consolidate all applications, without needing migration”. Presented last April, the new family of integrated expert systems by IBM is a new milestone for the corporate IT. Not to mention the new powerful cutting-edge mainframe system, zE12, announced last August 28th ...One billion dollars of investments in research and development activities, carried out in collaboration with 18 IBM centres and with the contribution of several customers worldwide. “They are outstanding innovations and numbers, which make the difference on the market and differentiate us from our competitors. As it has been happening for some years by now, in 2011 IBM invested 6 billion dollars and 40% of them were lavished in hardware solutions, therefore constantly providing value to customers. In the last 19 years, IBM has confirmed to be the company that has deposited the biggest number of patents in the United States”, explains Cereda. “That preliminary condition clarifies how our answers to the market originate from knowledge deriving from the scientific research and anyway are always inspired by the listening to companies’ requirements. It is our history that witnesses it”.
“An interesting datum is that the technological heart of Italian industries still mainly resides in the Power i range, the logic continuation of As/400 midrange systems; here take place the back end processes of administrative and management functions. That development has been oriented by the evolution of ACG solutions and of numerous packages implemented by our partners that have decreed the success of the midrange system for the management of the most important vertical processes. In the last ten years we have lived the growing diffusion of Internet in business and we have witnessed the proliferation of x86 architecture servers, but the theme of the cost reduction has become more and more central for enterprises and has involved the IT, too: it is strategic to find a balance between optimization and innovation for several realities”.
The need of simplifying business with smarter and smarter systems has led to a new concept of “machine”. If the ability of managing workloads at best, of integrating data and applications is determinant, the role of open systems is as important.
“The integration in the Power i range of As/400 platforms and Systems p, Unix-based, has coincided with the total opening towards industrial standards: today we can rely on an offer structured according to different architectures to satisfy adequately all market requirements: from SME, less organized but strongly involved in the short-term business trend, to bigger ones with notable transaction volumes. We have constantly improved the server range: I’m referring to the matters linked with virtualization, mainly with the range of blade systems, hypervisors such as Power VM. Today, thanks to the use of the complete platform Pure Systems, able to integrate natively into a chassis all the components needed to implement the consolidation of heterogeneous systems, we assure a leap of quality in solving complex problems”, explains Cereda.
CUSTOMERS AT THE CENTRE
“The opportunities that the new technological frontiers offer to enterprises are very concrete, also because IT instruments are a mean of extraordinary effectiveness for the upgrading and the efficiency of our production system. The new family of integrated Pure Systems was born from the experiences of customers all over the world and from the intention of simplifying and making the infrastructure management more transparent. Today the need of resource consolidation is very strong: to integrate servers, storage, networking, virtualization, and in this context system management software is the keystone of the change. We aim at the implementation of more efficient and agile information systems, easily enjoyed, managed and controlled, flexible and able to perceive the necessary changes for business”, comments Cereda.
Innovation completely resides in a machine that houses various systems, from Power i to x86 ones, adding the storage and the networking, a highly automated machine, controllable by a single console. Each chassis can be subdivided into thousands of virtual machines, with 43% energy savings in comparison with traditional systems.
“The Pure Systems range solves the economic equation of the IT spending by supplying deeply integrated systems, purposely designed for business sectors and functions. The adoption of this system eliminates most of the complexities with which organizations deal and allows freeing some resources to better focus on core activities. Besides, with these solutions we offer enterprises the possibility of introducing important transformations in the infrastructure, but in continuity with the systems already in use. Innovation, certainly, but with a careful look at the economic needs of users and with the protection of their investments”.
According to a shared study, carried out by IBM and IDC, today companies spend 70% or more of their IT budgets in simple operation and in maintenance, leaving few resources to be invested in other activities. Besides, two thirds of corporate IT projects exceed the planned spending or are running behind schedule, while only 1 IT department out of 5 can dedicate time and money to innovation.
“Apart from these data, what we still survey is the orientation to saving IT costs, while it would be necessary to widen the vision, embracing the enterprise in its entirety, and to reach higher flexibility of processes: only in this way the information technology component can become perceivable in all its real value”.
SOLUTIONS FOR ALL
“The range Pure Systems, which essentially addresses all those who feel the integration need in pressing way, completes the wide choice opportunities that we offer to customers, especially highlighting the management simplification and automation. Obviously, the globality or part of the information system can be structured in cloud modality thanks to native components in systems that allow implementing quickly safe and reliable cloud environments”, affirms Enrico Cereda.
Thanks to the collaboration with its Business Partners - 2, 000 realities with specialized components that allow following local markets from close up and customizing systems - IBM can support Italian enterprises with a widespread presence on the territory. The result is the capability of widely meeting the requirements of all user types, of each market sector.
“The originality of our offer is constituted by the fruitful combination of technology, services and financing formulas that enable all enterprises to adopt efficient infrastructures, tailor-made for specific needs and different budges”.
“The IT scenario changes and new paradigms spread. To protect and to manage at best the growing volume of data and to draw from them precious information for business is one of the decisive challenges that companies are facing. And also in this case our target is to simplify business with smarter and smarter systems, able to manage advanced solutions for the Business Analytics”, affirms Cereda.
An important facilitation for the adoption of Big Blue novelties are the flexible options offered by IBM Global Financing, a brand of IBM Corporation. Low rental fees and the absence of initial costs assure suitable solutions for any budget type.
“Our customers highly appreciate these initiatives. If, on one hand, we use better and better the global dimension to gain efficiency and competitiveness, on the other hand we have won more flexibility, bringing our best resources in direct contact with the market. The target consists in assuring more value and innovation to enterprises and institutions. Today not by chance our partners increasingly perceive us as a player that mainly talks about business: we do not only quantify the advantages of a solution but we adapt our proposals to the real requirements expressed, we explain the concrete advantages for their organizations in their specific markets, we indicate precise investment returns”.
The enterprises that are going to grow must change and choose new more effective business models, in line with the new market dynamics.
“The price reduction is only one aspect of the competitiveness that IT allows; also the process optimization, the capability of being first on the market and the flexibility to conquer the customer satisfaction are important. This discloses a world of opportunities that no organization can neglect, just because no enterprise is too small for not taking advantage of the new technological scenarios and none is so big and self-sufficient to avoid being involved. Our mission is to help all companies to win the present challenges, by anticipating future requirements, too...For this reason we are going on investing in Research and Development and in taking over leader companies with specialized competences and solutions. We want to do our best in terms of technological solutions and to offer all of our know how to help them in remaining competitive and in growing”, ends Enrico Cereda. And 2012 has not ended, yet.
Piemonte, Emilia Romagna, Marche. Risale agli anni '70 l'esordio della
fabbrica Rafal a Piangipane (RA): produce pannelli nobilitati e laminati
oligopolio”, commenta Giovanni Gioli, Amministratore Delegato.
BUSINESS IS GRANTED
In a saturated market each
single job-order must be attentively evaluated from the point of view of
margins, if you want to maintain a determinate market share. Trombini
Group, one of the major Italian manufacturers of raw and melamine
chipboard panels, finish foils, resins and edge banding for the
furniture industry, has developed a Performance Management project using
IBM Cognos technology. The managing director Giovanni Gioli talks about
that.
It started its activity in the Sixties with the Falco factory,
at Pomposa (FE), producing raw and melamine chipboards: today this site
is the diamond tip of Trombini group by technology and investments.
Among the most important Italian manufacturers of chipboard panels as
well as laminates, finish foils, resins and edge banding for the
furniture industry, the Group counts 5 factories headquartered in
Piedmont, Emilia Romagna and Marche. The starting of the Rafal factory
at Piangipane (RA) dates back to the Seventies: it produces faced
chipboard panels and laminates and in the Eighties it becomes a
reference point in the sector by creativity and capability of
innovating. In 1998 it takes over the Annovati company at Frossasco
(TO), historical enterprise in the panel world, while in 2003 the Group
is joined by Raf at Montelabbate (PU), which produces edging. “Trombini
Group is a solid reality that operates in a field characterized by low
margins and in a context of oligopoly”, comments Giovanni Gioli,
Managing Director. “We work in a sector where the wood price can change
in a month also according to percentages included between 10 and 35%: it
is essential to be able to make reflections in the medium-term to
understand when to ask for a rise or to evaluate how the variation can
affect average margins in a wide lapse of time. It proved to be
determinant, to defend our market shares, a system of monitoring and
control of the trend by job order and customer, in order to develop an
adequate price strategy. Thanks to IBM Cognos technology, proposed by
Var Group, we have developed an effective cost-benefit model, defining
support reports after the creation of the corporate Data Warehouse,
certified data source to feed the Performance Management solution”,
explains Gioli. The adopted solution, which makes available planning
functions, scenario modelling and predictive analyses for all company
roles, has allowed implementing a very reliable “top down and bottom up”
simulation in real time, with related impact on the economic costs.
“Today we make use of an analysis and report solution, addressed to the
company management, which allows us to verify the business trend at once
and to evaluate in that way the impact of decisions before they become
reality”.

chiave dell'IT nelle strategie di sviluppo.
filiali in Francia, UK, Spagna, Portogallo, Romania, Germania, USA e in
Abbiamo quindi
investimento in nuovi servizi IT.
LOOKING AT THE FUTURE
Polti group owes its success
to the application of the steam technique to small household appliances:
with Vaporella and Vaporetto products is an international reference
partner in the ironing and cleaning ambit. Paolo Pessi, ICT manager of
the Group, explains us the key role of IT in development strategies.
The
company was established at the end of the Seventies upon the initiative
of Franco Polti and Vaporella, the first iron with boiler for domestic
use, is one of his inventions: with Vaporella, Polti has created a new
market that today in Europe develops more than 5 million sales per year.
Today
the enterprise headquartered at Bulgarograsso (CO) is the main European
producer of small steam appliances and is the market leader in several
Countries. It owes its success to a farsighted development strategy that
has privileged the investments in cutting-edge technologies.
With
Vaporetto, steam cleaner that by now constitutes a product category in
all of its variants, Polti has approached the international markets with
the typical resourcefulness of Italian businesses and in a short time
it has widened the reference sectors with a complete range for
professional and medical environments, being present also in the
industry of the portioned coffee with a line of capsule machines. To
assure high quality standards in each process, Polti has maintained the
production of most of its catalogue products in its headquarters; at
Bulgarograsso, in fact, are located R&D departments, production and
assembly lines and the automated magazine. The orientation towards a
widened competitive space has led the company to the constant adaptation
to the market requirements: besides the direct presence with
subsidiaries in France, UK, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Germany, USA and
in strategic commercial zones such as Asia and Mexico, Polti is also
widening its presence in new markets – such as Japan – through reference
distributors.
“The internationalization process undertaken has made
necessary the acquisition of a management system that allows, in
everyday work, a wider, punctual and precise overall vision of the
activities performed by branches. In 2009 we had a heterogeneous
information system in application solutions and in procedures supporting
business. Therefore, we have defined a strategy of management cost
reduction and of investments in new IT services. The partnership with
IBM, with the choice of a Cloud project that supports the management
solution, has originated from the need of assuring uniformity to
procedures and processes, of improving the inter-functional
communication and the decisional modalities thanks to shared instruments
and information. The highlighted criticalities have determined the
decision of introducing new infrastructural solutions favouring a
complete and scalable integration, flexible for the future”, comments
Paolo Pessi, ICT Manager of Polti Group. “This added value results in
the capability of being more reactive in front of business requirements,
in terms of market and of organization”.
filiali”, dichiara Paolo Pessi. “The
internationalization process undertaken has made necessary the
acquisition of a management system that allows, in everyday work, a
wider, punctual and precise overall vision of the activities performed
by branches” affirms Paolo Pessi.

Vibram, world leader in the
production and marketing of high-performance rubber soles, exploits an
essential characteristic to support its growth: to couple craft skills
and technological innovations. Adriano Zuccala, General Manager of the
company, narrates it.
The unmistakable yellow octagon identifies a
brand renowned worldwide: Vibram, acronym of the founder Vitale
Bramani, who has coupled the passion for alpinism with a successful
entrepreneurial vision. The history of the company located at Albizzate
(VA), today managed by the third generation of entrepreneurs, is marked
by constant successes, starting from the creation of the first
vulcanized rubber sole in 1936, which has revolutionized alpine sports
and not only. Reference standard for the market, it is transversally
shared by very different sports disciplines: from the mountain lovers to
the reckless supermotard champions. It is synonymous of safety and
protection, quality, design for outdoor (also with the exclusive foot
glove Vibram Fivefingers®), free time, fashion, repair, industrial
applications, orthopaedics. “Each new product is conceived to satisfy a
precise use in optimal way and to meet end-users’ real needs. Soles,
with always forefront design, made with the best compounds, spring from
the in-depth study of the different reference targets, with the aim of
achieving the best protection performances, the highest comfort and
safety level and a long-lasting quality in time. Results are guaranteed
by severe tests carried out in lab and on the ground by Vibram Tester
Team”, explains Adriano Zuccala. Present with productive, research and
representation sites in Brazil, United States, Japan and China, its
'core' functions reside in the Albizzate headquarters, where are
concentrated most of the industrial design activities, the development
and the production of new technologies and solutions. The company, with
this structure, satisfies the needs of customers scattered in 120
Countries in the world. Vibram, partner of over 1,000 shoe factories and
with 40 million soles produced per year, has chosen IBM technology to
further increase its competitiveness. “To be more efficient, to go on
growing and to rely on a solid, scalable and flexible computer system,
in 2011 we decided to renovate our technological infrastructure, which
has been completely virtualized through VMWare on Blade IBM platform,
with the target of drastically reducing monitoring and ordinary
maintenance times and allowing highly reliable data access. We operate
in a global market and technology becomes an opportunity that permits an
important leap forward in terms of business”.
