E sono tecnologicamente all’avanguardia in tutti i settori.
“We have built our leadership on the principles of the constant improvement, on flexibility and on the capability of opportunely meeting customers’ different requirements”, explains Borsani.
MEASURING THE FUTURE
The company’s history began in the far 1846, when Carl Zeiss set up his precision mechanical workshop and produced his first microscope. Today Zeiss is an international company, in the technological forefront, committed to the design and manufacturing of a broad range of optical, electronic and fine engineering products. But the mission has not changed since the origins: to improve, through innovation, production modalities and people’s life quality.

Twenty-four thousand employees, a yearly turnover of over 4,200 million Euros, 30 production centres and 50 subsidiaries in the world. Today this is Zeiss Group, born from the precision mechanical workshop that Carl Zeiss established in the far 1896 at Jena, in Germany. Today Zeiss products find applications in the world of ophthalmic optics, medicine and industry. And they are in the technological forefront in all sectors.
“The history of the company and of its evolution is marked by important successes and by a constant growth, result of happy intuitions that have indicated the way to travel. Zeiss innovations contribute in the progress in several fields, such as for instance in the eye care sector, with instruments for diagnosis and therapy, in ophthalmic with lenses, in the medical research and in microsurgery with microscopes, in the mechanical and automotive industry with high-precision metrology and in the mass production of microchips thanks to the aid of our optical systems”, explains Giovanni Borsani, Manager of the Metrology Division of Zeiss Italia.
Through the development and the implementation of more and more rapid and precise instruments to measure, to calibrate and to perfect the production quality and to make it more competitive, the company has gradually gained excellent technological know-how, capability of thinking in global way, deep organizational culture.
THE ATTITUDE TO QUALITY
“In the Group we like repeating that we work to devise and to produce increasingly advanced technological solutions, mainly aiming at improving people’s life conditions. For Zeiss it is not only a slogan, but an essential value. Let’s just think of the particular 'status' of the company, which for over 110 years has been property of a Foundation. Zeiss Foundation represents in fact a particular business model: it is an autonomous body, it has no properties, neither private nor state, and has no shares of foreign capitals. Only the Foundation’s companies are the responsible for their autonomous growth. The statute, still in force today, defines the tasks, the responsibilities and the mission of the enterprises composing it: the economic subsistence, the promotion of the scientific research, the protection of workers’ rights. It is significant the fact that in the statute itself there is a whole paragraph dedicated to the Research & Development Sector; besides, the investment of the Group in R&D exceeds 10% of the annual gross turnover. The mission, the values and the culture of the company do not only consider the economic-financial character but are rooted into the technical-industrial aspects, with the aim of supporting and boosting our customer-enterprises, in Italy and in the world, to grow and to produce more and better, to build together a better future”, states Borsani.
The Italian branch, set up in 1948, markets on the whole national territory optics, precision engineering and electronics products, and it is subdivided into three business units: Electromedical, Microscopy and industrial Metrology. “In Zeiss Italia the most important division, in terms of turnover, is Metrology, undisputed leader on a national scale. Our goal is to provide the industries of the various fields with the most suitable solutions, from the technical and economic point of view, to satisfy even the most complex requirements of daily measuring. Our company paves the way to new achievements in all application sectors. Especially in metrology: our first measuring machine was conceived at the beginning of the Seventies and it was already a continuous scanning machine. Until 5-6 years ago our competitors still argued that the continuous scanning was an unnecessary technology while today all measuring machines operate with that modality. Over thirty years ago we fixed a standard with which our competitors have been compelled to comply today”.
GROWING TOGETHER WITH CUSTOMERS
“Zeiss Italia metrology division has just turned 25 years, anniversary that we have celebrated with all of our collaborators (about 80) with a three-day cruise. In the company we try to develop human resources and to take particular care of the relationships with our collaborators because we think that people are the driving force of our growth. The constructive relationship between workers and enterprise is witnessed by the fact that at Zeiss Italia the turnover is very low: we rely on skilful and motivated people, whom all competitors envy to us, and it is our interest to gratify them so that they remain part of our team for as long as possible”.
The Italian subsidiary is composed by a main commercial structure, headquartered at Arese, in the outskirts of Milano, and by three Carl Zeiss Quality Services branches in Novara, Reggio Emilia and Rovereto, which are service companies. “We offer our customers a valid advice and pre-after sale service, certainly one of the 'pluses' that distinguish our reality from the others. To satisfy the daily needs of the quality control of industrial processes, adequate and efficient services of technical and applicative assistance are necessary, including engineering consultancy of hardware and software type. The metrological support is then completely guaranteed. Carl Zeiss Quality Services site in Novara is organized also to supply subcontracting measuring operations, part-program services, training and calibration of measuring arms. In other words, we have made the customer service our business philosophy. Our goal is to create an active partnership with users, to establish long-lasting collaboration relationship based on trust. I believe that the efficiency of the offered service is one of the pillars of our success. A statement witnessed also by the most recent data: in a period of strong recession, 2011 was the ever best year for the Metrology Division of Zeiss. We have built our leadership on the principles of the constant improvement, on flexibility and on the capability of opportunely meeting customers’ different requirements”.
THE INNATE SENSE OF PRECISION
Is there a recipe for this success? “The secret is to care about customer satisfaction. The most important advertising in our business is the word of mouth among enterprises. Another important element is represented by the wide product range, suitable for all types of applications and of 'pockets'. Until some years ago we had a limit, if you can call it like that: we were damaged by our prestige itself, we were considered too 'high', in terms of quality, by some enterprises. In the last period, on the contrary, we have succeeded in widening our range so that we can offer some products also to customers with less demanding technological needs and fewer capitals to invest”.
From the point of view of technological developments, Carl Zeiss is particularly focusing on the production control sector. “We have created a line of products that no more operate in the metrological room but directly in production. They are machines suitable for functioning in critical environments and then also in presence of vibrations and dirtiness. We believe that this is a winning move for the future: companies will increasingly need to produce and to control in rapid times. The measuring centres of the –MAX line, for instance, represent the most adequate solution for the precise and cost-effective measuring of big pieces in productive environment. They can be loaded from three sides and assure high performances. The other sector in which we are investing a lot is metro-tomography, a synthesis of metrology and tomography: we are working to create faster tests, therefore more suitable for the industrial world. It is a real revolution for the metrological world. Where until yesterday only external or destructive controls were possible on complex pieces or with internal geometries, today a complete, accurate and precise testing is feasible. With Metrotom, for instance, you can detect the external and internal part of the component thanks to the X-ray technology: it is possible to perform both the analysis of defects and the metrological verification”. From gantry machines to measuring ones for production, from optical machines to horizontal-arm systems and up to metro-tomography solutions, from big machines to sensors Carl Zeiss proposes the variety, the precision and the quality of measuring in its most-cutting-edge forms to the industrial world, assuring greater design freedom and always new choice opportunities. “Precision is our job, it belongs to our DNA. Anticipating the most innovative solutions or solving the most immediate requirements – ends Giovanni Borsani - Carl Zeiss always offers high-quality precise answers, coupling the most advanced technology with the best user-friendliness. Ranging from the most immediate instruments to the most sophisticated machines supplied to the biggest industries of high-tech sectors, we propose a complete catalogue. But our eyes are always looking at the future: the excellence of our products, for quality, precision and speed, is mirrored by the excellence of service, assured by qualified and always updated personnel. A punctual, effective and timely service in all of its phases, pre and after sale, which constitutes a precious added value for customers and a further important distinguishing factor that “measures’ the success of Carl Zeiss in Italy and in the world”.
“Precision is our job, it belongs to our DNA” affirms Borsani.
